Pastor's Bible Study

The Pastor's Thursday Bible Study will meet again in January.

Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes

A four week study starts on January 15th through February 5th in the Fellowship Hall.  There will be a potluck dinner before the study at 6:30 p.m., and the study will begin at 7:00 p.m.  The book is Misreading Scripture With Western Eyes by Randolph Richards.  The study will be taught by Matt Kapus. 

 

Disciple Fast Track--Starts September 4th

Tabernacle will be offering a Disciple Fast Track II:  Into the Word, Into the World.  The study will begin September 4th on Wednesday nights from 7:00  to 8:30 p.m.  Disciple II is a 24-week program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders.  This study immerses students in the books of Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts.  We will follow the Disciple format of a theme word, theme verse, statement of the human condition, daily and weekly assignments, and prayer.  Disciple I is not a prerequiste to this class.

We will be using two books.  One for Genesis and Exodus and one for Luke and Acts.  Each book costs $13.00.  If you have further questions or are interested in signing up, please contact Eileen David at eileendavid15@yahoo.com or 540-374-5266.

UMW Book Club Date Change--August 18th

The UMW Book Club new meeting date is Sunday, August 18th in Room 411 at 4:30 p.m.  We are reading TheSame Sky by Amanda Eyre Ward.  Read the book and come join us for a time of discussion, growth and fellowship!  Contact Sherri Stadtler at 540-623-6280.

United Methodist Women Mission Study

In the month of October, Tabernacle UMW will do the Mission Study titled Women United for Change:  150 Years in Mission.  The study will be on every Wednesday in October starting on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. in room 413.  Please join us to learn about the history of the United Methodist Women and the on-going amazing work they do.  Questions?  Contact Sherri Stadtler at 540-623-6280 or email at djnrook@yahoo.com.  Books will be distributed before the first meeting.

Women Encouraged  New Group

Are you a woman looking to connect with other women, be up lifted in your journey, draw into a deeper faith and touch the lives of others?  Women Encouraged is a new group starting at Tabernacle.  Our first meeting is Thursday, December 19th at 7:00 p.m. in room 413.  We are focusing on creating a supportive fellowship, growing close to God, and doing some missions supported by Tabernacle and the United Methodist Women.  Questions?  Contact Sherri Stadtler at 540-623-6280 or email at djnrook@yahoo.com.

 

 Mission Partners

Would you like to help with Missions at Tabernacle but have limited time?  If so, you could become a Mission Partner and plug in when you are able.  There are many ongoing activities needed to keep Missions going.  Examples include making phone calls, packing zip lock bags with soaps and lotions for Micah (see more info below), delivering donations to Micah or SECA, making informational posters for mission projects, helping to host a Red Cross Blood Drive at Tabernacle, designing or putting together displays, making announcements at worship services, and much more.  Mission help is needed throughout the year.

 

Volunteers Needed For SECA 

Volunteers are needed at SECA for approximately one hour on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  SECA needs volunteers to pick up food at the Courtland Food Lion at 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and take it to SECA.  Choose a day and come and volunteer!  For more information or to volunteer, please call 540- 582-2465.

 

Worship Committee Invitation

The Worship Committee would like to extend an invitation to Tabernacle members who would like to share their talents in the following areas:  Communion Steward and Lay Reading at the Traditional services.  We are currently looking for those who would like to be Lay Readers.  On average, a Lay Reader takes part in four services a year and assists the Pastor in the opening of Worship Service.  We are in need of Lay Readers for the 11:00 a.m. Service for the month of September.  Please contact Donna Jones to volunteer or to find out more information.  540-207-5348 or fdesigns2000@icloud

 

Contemporary Service Volunteers

The Contemporary Service is in need of volunteers to be Greeters, Ushers, and Communion Servers.  Sign up sheets will be located by the entrance to the MPR.  You can sign up for just one Sunday or multiple Sundays.  We are also looking for volunteers to set up and take down coffee time for the Contemporary Service.  There will be a sign up sheet for those who are interested in helping with that.

 

An Opportunity to Serve Once a Year

You may have wondered who puts the bread and grape juice on the communion table for the 8:15 and 11:00 communion services.  There are twelve faithful communion stewards-one person for each month.  We currently need volunteers to fill upcoming vacancies.  If you have questions, please contact Janet Craig at 757-784-5354 or Margaret Kackley.

 

Micah Ministry

Tabernacle families continue to support feeding those who are struggling in our community.  December 20th will be the next dinner.  The menu is turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, dinnerrolls, and pies..  Sign-up sheets for food donations are located outside the Fellowship Hall and in the MPR.  Please include your phone number with your information as it helps us make contacts as needed for food adjustments and reminders.  Thank you.  "God has blessed me with more than I need.  Because I have more, I will give more and do more" (Pastor Andy Stanley).  If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please contact  Gary or Linda Gross at 540-842-5492 or email garlind68@verizon.net.    

  

Nursery Helpers Needed

If you are able to help in the nursery during any of the services as a backup to our regular workers, please stop in the nursert to sign up.  Please Note:  A background check is required.  Thank you!

 

Worship

Lay Reader.  Assist with Traditional Services.  Make announcements before the service and lead Affirmation of Faith and Prayer of Congregation as printed in the bulletin.  On the first Sunday of the month, assist with Communion. 

Greeters.  Assist with giving out bulletins, greeting individuals, seating individuals, and meeting visitors.  Give visitors Gift Bags and make sure they know where various areas, such as bathrooms and Fellowship Hall, are located.  For more information and questions, call Donna Jones at 540-207-5348 or email fdesigns2000@icloud.com.  

 

Communion for Shut-Ins
The 1st Sunday of each month take communion to shut-ins, people in the hospital, and those who are unable to attend church.  For more information, contact Susan Pleasants at (540)786-6162 or visitation@tabumc.org

 

Prayers and Squares Quilting
Each Wednesday and the second Saturday of the month, individuals make quilts for those who need prayer and healing.  This group meets from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m.  For more information, contact Kim Wainwright at kewain1110@verizon.net.

 

MPKids

Calling all secret agents!  Our next Mission will be December 15th from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in Room 402.  MPKids is open to all children in Kindergarten through 5th grade.  We would love to have more agents to join our team this Year.  If you have any questions, please contact Amy Reardon at amyreardon119@gmail.com.

 

Join the Choir

Do you like to sing?  Do you like to have fun?  Then we would love to have you in our church choir!  We meet on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary.  Like to sing but don't want to make a full time commitment?  Why not think about joining us for the Christmas Cantata!  Please see Melanie Bolas or Donna Steckler with any questions.

 

Music
Cherub Choir for 3 year olds through first grade.  

Youth Chancel Choir for grades 2 through 8.  Practices on Sunday morning from  9:30 to 9:50 in the Music Office.  

Chancel Choir for 14 year olds and up meets on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. 

Catherine Stanley Ringers (Bell Choir) for high school to adults and should be able to read music or willing to learn.  Meets on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Praise and Worship Team for high school to adults and must audition to participate.  Meets on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. 

 

Sunday School Classes
Contact person for Sunday School classes is Brenda Bishop (540)786-0720.  Sunday School classes meet from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. with the exception of Women of Faith that meets at 11:00.

 

Adult Classes

The Mary Thomas Class (Room 412) uses Adult Bible Studies, a quarterly publication which focusses on a different theme each quarter.  Each lesson in the quarter is based on scripture passage. 

The Leon Anderson Discovery Classs (Room 411) will study John for Everyone by N. T. Wright.

The Upper Room Class (Room 304) is beginning the study of Ephesians by John F. MacArthur.

The Seekers (Room 413) meet from 9:45 to 10:45 and will study Life Application Bible Studies--Luke.

The Women of Faith (Room 413) meet from 11:00 to Noon.  Their next study starts in mid-May.  They will be studying Jen Wilkin's Sermon on the Mount.

Youth Classes
Curriculum is topic based and designed to help the youth live out their faith in every day life.

Middle High
Youth in grades six to eight.  They meet in 414 (yellow hall).

Senior High
Youth in grades nine to twelve.  They meet in 112 (old building).  They will be studying What Makes a Hero?  The Death Defying Ministry of Jesus.

Children
Curriculum based material which introduces the children to the Bible.  The classes are divided as follows:

Three to Four year olds - Rm 407 (green hall)

Kindergarten to First grade - Rm 406 (green hall)

Second to Third grade - Rm 403 (green hall)

Fourth to Fifth grad - Rm 402 (green hall)

 

United Methodist Men
Provide discussion on spiritual topics of interest to men and discussion of fund raising opportunities to support church and community projects.  UMM meets the second Sunday of each month.  They meet at 7:00 p.m. in room 413.  All men are invited!!  For more information, contact David Kellison at 540-786-3930.

 

United Methodist Women
Provide a creative and supportive fellowship where women can continue their spiritual growth while exploring mission opportunities in the church and the community.  The theme for our programs in 2019 is a Sisterhood of Grace.  We meet at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 10th, April 7th, June 9th, August 11th, and October 13th to share in a program about our Sisterhood of Grace, plan our mission giving, and support each other.  We also have smaller groups meeting monthly called Circles.  We hosted a Mother/Daughter Ladies Tea on March 31.  We go on regular monthly lunch outings to the Micah Community Cafe.  We will host the annual church wide Advent Luncheon on Sunday December 1st.  Also, new for this year, we have started a book club based on the books from the United Methodist Women Reading program.  For more information about the United Methodist Women and how you can get plugged into a multigenerational, inspiring group of ladies, please contact Sherri Stadtler at 540-548-1629 or djnrook@yahoo.com.

 

Women's Circles
Dorcas Circle meets the second Tuesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. at a member's house.

Rosa Miller Circle meets the first Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at the church in room 413.
